I wonder about you, Time –

Do you run like a river?

A stream that makes its way

through land and sea,

through our world

- the infinite galaxies

- the whole Universe

lit by uncounted suns.

Are you young and energetic?

Breaking through barriers

of space and energy and matter

to create new worlds

and wear away the old,

evolving with an unending

and unknowable variety

of life forms.

Or are you middle-aged?

Tinkering with the details

of your creations

with the arrogance

of your power?

Is there just one time warp

or many for the weft

in the fabricated

string theory

of your existence?

But is it possible that

you are really the Old Man

many have called you?

Tired and slow and weary

from aeons of creating;

a wide-flowing river

beside which a youth stands

and makes us feel old

before we have had

the chance

to really be young.
